Fishing
the Western Eyre Peninsula
There are a handful of places in Australia where the fishing is so consistently exceptional that serious anglers keep coming back, year after year, and tell almost no one.
The western coast of the Eyre Peninsula is one of them.Embark on an unrivalled aquatic experience with Wild Sea Lions & Dolphins, in the safe and shallow waters of Baird Bay.
This is South Australia’s “Seafood Frontier” a sweeping, largely undeveloped coastline where cold, nutrient-rich Southern Ocean waters collide with shallow protected bays to create one of the most biodiverse and productive fisheries on the continent. There are not too many popular South Australian fish species that cannot be caught on the Eyre Peninsula and the west coast sits at the heart of it.
The bays along this coastline serve as critical nursery areas for King George Whiting, Snapper, Salmon, Garfish, and Flathead, which are all species that define Australian recreational fishing at its finest. Offshore, the grounds open up into something altogether more serious: Yellowtail Kingfish, Southern Bluefin Tuna, Blue Groper, Nannygai, and Blue Morwong patrol deeper water that remains largely unfished by the crowds that descend on more accessible parts of the coast. Monster Mulloway haunt the far west beaches, torpedo-sized Salmon run all around the coast, and horse Kingfish patrol the inshore structures for those willing to venture further. Add Southern Calamari, Blue Swimmer Crabs, and the legendary King George Whiting widely regarded as one of the finest eating fish in the world and the picture is complete.
The seasons here are generous. King George Whiting numbers are most reliable during the cooler months but can be taken in excellent numbers year-round. Winter brings exceptional inshore fishing, uncrowded waters, and conditions that reward those who make the journey.
This is not a fishery that has been discovered and overrun. It rewards the traveller who seeks it out.
Fishing at Baird Bay
Baird Bay offers anglers something rare, exceptional variety, easy access, and chic coastal retreats in one remote corner of South Australia. From sheltered inshore flats to productive offshore grounds, it’s a fishing destination that delivers regardless of your style or experience level.
Your Base on the Water
There are fishing destinations, and then there are places where everything just works. Baird Bay Seaside Villas is the latter.
The beach launch sits metres from your door. You’re on the water before the light has fully broken, fishing the morning bite at its peak, and back at the villa in time for a morning coffee. Out again for the afternoon run. Anchor in front of the villas when you’re done. No ramp queues, no long drives, no wasted hours just direct access to the water, fish, and time that belongs entirely to you.
As the sun drops behind the bay, there’s only one question worth asking: what are we cooking tonight?
Inside the Bay — Inshore Fishing
The bay is deceptively productive. Gin-clear water over sand and weed is a serious fishery and wait until something takes your lure and doesn’t stop.
The sheltered waters of Baird Bay are ideal for light tackle fishing and inshore exploration. A mix of sand flats, channels, seagrass beds, and deeper pockets creates outstanding habitat for a variety of sought-after species.
King George Whiting
Among the most popular targets at Baird Bay, and for good reason. Renowned for their sporting qualities and exceptional eating, King George Whiting are found working across sandy areas and weed edges throughout the bay. Soft plastics, small hard-bodied lures, and traditional bait presentations all produce outstanding results.
Garfish
A west coast staple and one of the finest eating fish in the bay. Garfish school in the shallower reaches and respond readily to berley and small float rigs, these are deceptively good fun on light gear, and exceptional on the plate.
Flathead
Reliable, hard-fighting, and excellent on the table. These ambush predators take soft plastics worked along the bottom and hard-bodied lures across sandy channels. Their willingness to hit a wide range of presentations makes them a great target for anglers of all experience levels.
Silver Trevally
Commonly found in the deeper sections of the bay, Trevally provide spirited fights on light tackle. Often in schools, they respond well to soft plastics and small metal lures — plenty of action when you find them.
Australian Salmon
When Salmon are working the surface on baitfish, it’s hard to beat. Powerful runs, aerial displays, and aggressive takes when you cast into feeding schools and a relaxed session can turn fast-paced in seconds.
For lure fishing in particular, Baird Bay is an ideal environment. Shallow, clear water, abundant structure, and a protected bay that stays fishable even when stronger winds affect other parts of the coast.
Beyond the Bay — Offshore Fishing
The offshore transition happens quickly here. Within minutes of clearing the bay entrance, the bottom drops away and the character of the fishing changes entirely. Productive offshore waters are home to some of South Australia’s most exciting sport and table fish species.
Southern Bluefin Tuna
A major drawcard, and one of the reasons anglers return to the Eyre Peninsula year after year. Powerful, fast, and capable of producing genuinely unforgettable encounters whether casting into surface-busting schools or trolling the offshore grounds.
Yellowtail Kingfish
Among the most respected sportfish in Australian waters. Strong, relentless, and unforgiving on lighter tackle. Every capture is a genuine achievement.
Queen Snapper and Nannygai
Two of the most highly regarded table fish in South Australian waters, both found in good numbers in the offshore grounds around Baird Bay. Exceptional eating quality, and a welcome addition to any day’s catch.
